Compassion in World Farming - Ireland is part of
the international farm animal welfare organisation, Compassion in World Farming. We campaign and lobby for farm animals to be reared humanely, and for an end to the long distance
transport of animals. Compassion in World Farming - Ireland is represented on the Irish Government's Farm Animal
Welfare Advisory Council.
2012:
April 2012: Compassion in World Farming – Ireland is very concerned about exports of live cattle from the Republic of Ireland
to Kazakhstan. From Ireland, these animals face an 18.5 hour sea-crossing to Cherbourg in France, and then a road journey
of some 4,800 km. We are opposed to this trade because we believe animals should
not be subjected to journeys of this length, even if they are breeding animals. Read more ...
March 2012: The Irish Agriculture Minister is in the process of deciding what the future for fur farming
will be in the Republic of Ireland. Read Compassion in World Farming - Ireland's summary of
why we believe that fur farming should be banned. Fur farming is already illegal in Northern Ireland.

3rd January 2012: Read up on egg labelling after the battery cage ban.
It is now illegal for any supermarket or shop in the EU to sell shell eggs (i.e. whole eggs in their shells) produced
in the EU by hens in barren battery cages. This means that shell eggs produced and sold in the EU, and labelled as 'Eggs from caged hens', must be from hens
in 'enriched' cages. Read more ...
January 2012: The 8hours petition, which urges the EU to limit journeys for animals going to slaughter to
a maximum of 8 hours, has surpassed its target of one million signatures! Follow
this campaign, which is supported by Compassion in World Farming - Ireland. You can still add YOUR name to the
on-line petition.
27th December 2011: Compassion in World Farming - Ireland welcomes the ban on barren battery cages for laying hens, which
comes into force in all EU Member States, including Ireland, on 1st January 2012. This is one of the most significant victories in the EU for animal
welfare. Although the ban does not mean that the EU will be cage-free
(so-called "enriched cages", which give hens slightly more room, a place to perch, scratch and
nest, are still permitted), at least for one day, Compassion in World Farming and all our supporters can celebrate a
monumental step forwards for hen welfare in the EU.
16th December 2011: Read our letter published
in The Irish Times today, urging consumers to choose free-range pork.
11th December 2011:Read our December Newsletter with articles about: welfare problems for mink and foxes farmed for their fur; the
fur farming Review Group set up by the Irish Agriculture Minister and how to make a submission to this (deadline end of December);
Compassion in World Farming's new EU campaign, Filthy Business, which focuses on the need to move away from factory farming
in Europe; and the forthcoming EU-wide ban on barren battery cages for laying hens that comes into effect in the New Year.
5th December 2011: Compassion in World Farming - Ireland welcomes that the Irish Minister for Agriculture, Food
and the Marine, Simon Coveney, has established a Review Group in his Department to review all aspects of fur farming. On 1st December 2011, Minister Coveney said (in answer to a Parliamentary Question from Maureen O'Sullivan, TD) that,
following the review of fur farming, he will consider what action, if any, to take.

examines which enrichment materials satisfy pigs' behavioural needs and EU legislation, based on published scientific
studies.
