28th January 2010: Report on the slaughter of mink and foxes on Irish fur farms is now available
This report, "Welfare aspects of the slaughter of fur producing animals in Ireland", is by the Agriculture Minister's
Scientific Advisory Committee on Animal Health and Welfare. It acknowledges that some of the methods of slaughter used to kill
farmed mink in Ireland are "not acceptable". The report recommends that the gassing of mink in carbon dioxide should not be
permitted, nor should gassing mink in engine exhaust gasses. Regarding the killing of farmed foxes, which is usually done by
anus-to-mouth electrocution, the report says that international recommendations suggest that farmed foxes should be killed by lethal injection administered by
a veterinary surgeon. Compassion in World Farming - Ireland has urged Agriculture Minister Brendan Smith to put in place
all of the report's recommendations for the remaining killing seasons until the agreed
phase-out of fur farming is completed. (Read more about
