What does Compassion in World Farming-Ireland want for the future?
Compassion in World Farming wants all farm animals treated as sentient beings
The overall aim of Compassion is for all farm animals to be treated humanely in the way that they are
reared, transported and slaughtered. In the Republic of Ireland, the rest of the European Union, and beyond, hundreds
of millions of farm animals are kept in conditions which do not allow them to carry out their natural behaviours, and
are transported on long journeys that can cause stress and suffering.
EU law now recognises that animals
are 'sentient beings'. This means that they
can suffer and feel pain, and they can also enjoy a sense of well-being.
Compassion in World Farming is convinced that once people understand how farm animals can, and often do, suffer
they will join the growing band of people calling for a real change in the way we treat these creatures.
