What does Compassion in World Farming-Ireland want for the future?
Compassion wants all farm animals treated as sentient beings
The overall aim of Compassion is for
all farm animals to be treated humanely in the way that they are reared,
transported and slaughtered. In the Republic of Ireland, the rest of the
European Union, and beyond, hundreds of millions of farm animals are kept
in conditions which cause them pain and suffering. There is now a
legally-binding EU Protocol which recognises that farm animals
are sentient beings. This means that they can suffer and feel pain, and they can also enjoy a sense of well-being.
Compassion is convinced that once people understand
how farm animals can, and often do, suffer they will join the growing
band of people calling for a real change in the way we treat these
creatures.
Quality production with very high animal welfare standards
Compassion-Ireland believes that Ireland is ideally placed to rear animals to very high welfare
standards, and to produce very high quality food.
