  • 3rd December 2004: TV star Molly Bhreathnach joins CIWF protestors in Dublin to present a petition signed by thousands of people to Agriculture Minister Coughlan. Read CIWF's press release about "Ban Fur Farming" petition hand-in.
  • 3rd December 2004 Ban Fur Farming peaceful protest outside Department of Agriculture, Kildare Street, Dublin.
    Background: There are currently 6 mink farms and 2 farms with fox in the Republic of Ireland. The animals live in rows of small barren cages until they are killed at about 6 months old. Fur farming is already illegal in Northern Ireland, Britain and Austria and is being phased out in Italy. For further information info@ciwf.ie
  • 23rd November 2004: CIWF condemns decision of the EU Agriculture Council to defer a decision on new rules on journey times, rest periods and stocking densities for animals during transport for 6 years. Agreement on greater training, certification and enforcement is, however, welcome. Read CIWF's press release about the agreed new EU Regulation for animal transport.
  • 1st November 2004: CIWF-Ireland's Director spoke to presenter Joe Duffy on RTE's popular radio programme, "Liveline", about fur farming in Ireland. There was huge interest, and the subject was returned to the next day. People were clearly shocked to learn that fur farms operate in Ireland and CIWF received many calls of support for its campaign. Several Sunday papers carried lengthy stories about CIWF's campaign as a result of the Liveline interview.
  • 19th September 2004: CIWF takes part in the Cork mini marathon, raising funds for CIWF's campaign to ban fur farming in the Republic of Ireland where there are currently 6 mink farms and 2 farms with silver and Arctic fox.
  • 26th August 2004: CIWF calls for an immediate end to EU subsidies fuelling live cattle exports to the Middle East in light of a new EU report that says more beef is consumed than produced in the EU for the first time in 20 years.   • 9th August 2004: CIWF survey of Irish supermarkets finds that most boxes of battery eggs are still not labelled as "Eggs from caged hens" as required by EU law. Read more about CIWF's egg labelling survey and what is required under recently enacted EU legislation.
  • 27th July 2004: CIWF responds to a RTE radio program on chicken meat by pointing out the suffering involved in intensive chicken rearing. Read the full statement about problems in chicken production.
  • 21st June 2004: CIWF welcomes EU signing Council of Europe Convention on International Animal Transport but says this fails to lay down specific journey times and will not resolve problems. Read more about EU signing animal transport Convention.
  • 27th April 2004: CIWF welcomes collapse of EU animal transport talks in Luxembourg and expresses relief that the Irish Presidency proposal - which was a step backward for animal welfare protection - was thrown out.   • 19th April 2004: CIWF announces Ban Live Export protest outside Dept. of Agriculture, Dublin, on Thursday 22nd April at 11.30 am.
